I’m not a person who watches TV. I don’t own a TV so that might contribute to it. Instead, I follow the news on the internet and read articles there. But a few days ago when I visited a friend I had an opportunity to watch TV for some good time. Curiosity got hold of me so I tried out the buttons on the remote in an attempt to change the channel in search of an interesting program but every press of a button led me to a gossip talk show (lugambo) with endless series of drama; keeping track of who is who, what is who doing, who’s having a fight with who, and I realized how much time those shows consume of our time. Especially now when many of us don’t have so much to do during the days and we can’t go out either. Surely this is distracting us from our own reality.

It made me think, isn’t it better to do something useful with the time we have. Something that can help us in a long run to lower the current and future unemployment rate caused by the crisis brought by the pandemic.

Maybe we could have an everyday talk show that talks about small-scale entrepreneurs and their businesses. Inspiring and mostly teaching us how to create our own employees in the long run (e.i. What if we learned e-commerce? Since it’ll inevitably become our new tomorrow? I mean we spend time on these talk shows anyways. It wouldn’t hurt to exchange one gossip hour for one educational hour, right? Because I believe this would be a great time for us to revisit everything that we have been doing in the past years as young people so that we can get ready to investigate the future.

Just a thought in my tiny head. What do we do with our time during this lockdown? What should we do different once given the second chance past this health crisis? How can we remain employed even in the lockdown? Because truth be told COVID-19 may go away after a long time but even if it does disappear soon, its scares will live with us forever.

Always in search of knowledge and understanding
