The most popular Dance Art Form in Uganda

The most popular dance art form in Uganda is Hip-hop or call it Breakdance, which means that most dancers in Ugandan are hip-hop /urban dancers, now this also means that most of the dance events that happen here in Uganda are in that category of style. Now I know you’re asking yourself how come?

This is because of the great inspiring impact made by Breakdance project Uganda “BPU” (RESPECT). Because of its unique mission and aim to engage young people in elements of the hip-hop culture to build leadership skills, self esteem, promote social responsibility, access to formal and informal education, as well as employment opportunities through private teaching, performances and also building a capacity to be a positive role model to others /positive change to members and local communities.

BPU has attracted youths from every background, by offering free hip-hop/breakdancing classes in different parts of the country and organizing events. BPU members do outreach visits to different areas in the region as a way to reach out to more youths and to get people involved or inspired. This way BPU has managed to reach out to people of different social status across Uganda and the rest of the world.

Now due to its great inspiring impacts did to lives of youths, this has also inspired many of BPU elder members to start up small organization in different parts of Uganda having a similar mission or aim as BPU ( OF WHICH SOME MAY DENY) but this has inspired and influenced more youths to discover this dance art style and at the same time the people haven’t forgotten the impact done by BPU;
“Oh not forgetting that am also a member of Breakdance project Uganda”.

Now me, I have always been interested in observing myself in everything so somehow I got a chance to discover contemporary dance the first time I saw Michael Kaddu of Uganda (RESPECT) performing at the dance week festival. I was so inspired by him which got me involved in trying out contemporary dance.

Now, As a contemporary dancer, I think and believe that contemporary dance is an art form that has not been utilized or rather explored in Uganda. I think that for contemporary dancers, our work is about spreading the knowledge and love of contemporary dance in this region. I know that we’re very very few but let’s not forget that we’re here coz the future of contemporary dance can’t build up its safe, I say since I think that it is an art form yet to be acknowledged and treasured for what it can do in transforming people’s minds and well-being. So that is what we should strive to accomplish with our work as contemporary dance artists.

In the true sense of the word, I believe there is a need for total commitment as this will allow the total integrity of the art form to land and find a place in many people’s heart in Uganda.
